Understanding Natural Oils and Their Benefits
Not every oil does the same job, and some do almost nothing.
Understand your scalp and unlock your hair’s full potential.
Most hair advice starts at the wrong end. We reach for the length — the split ends, the frizz, the breakage — and treat what we can see. But every strand on your head is produced by a follicle sitting in living skin, and that skin decides what the follicle can build.
The scalp has the same layered structure as the skin on your face: a barrier that holds moisture in and irritants out, an oil supply that keeps it supple, and a community of microbes that keeps the whole thing balanced. It also has roughly 100,000 follicles packed into it, each one a small organ with its own blood supply and growth cycle.
When the barrier is stripped — by harsh surfactants, by washing too often, by product that never fully rinses — the scalp responds the way any irritated skin does. It gets tight, flaky and inflamed. And inflammation is the enemy of a productive follicle.
Hair is the result. The scalp is the cause.
Not tight after washing. Not itchy by day three. No visible flaking, no tenderness at the parts, no soreness where a style pulls. If you can run a fingertip along your part and feel nothing in particular, that is the goal.
Before you buy anything, spend two weeks paying attention. Note how your scalp feels the day after washing, three days after, and the day before your next wash. That pattern tells you more than any product label.
Then build the routine around what you found: a gentler cleanser if you feel stripped, more frequent washing if you are oily and flaking, a lightweight scalp oil if you are dry and tight. Start at the skin, and the length takes care of itself.
Not every oil does the same job, and some do almost nothing.
A protective style only protects if it is installed, maintained and taken down properly.
Almost every mystery breakage problem comes down to this balance. Hair needs both water and structure. Too much of one without the other, and the hair either snaps…
The goal is not a perfect style. It is a child who does not dread the chair.
Growth is mostly about what you stop losing.
