Oil is the most misunderstood shelf in hair care. It is sold as a cure-all, applied at the wrong stage, and expected to do things it physically cannot. Understanding the difference between a sealing oil and a penetrating one solves most of the confusion.
A small number of oils have a molecular structure that lets them move past the cuticle and into the cortex, where they reduce the swelling that damages hair during washing. Coconut oil is the best studied. Olive and avocado penetrate partially.
These work best before washing, applied thirty minutes ahead, because their value is protecting the strand during the wash itself.
Most oils sit on the surface. Jojoba, argan, grapeseed, sweet almond, marula and baobab all form a light film that slows moisture loss and reduces friction. They do not moisturise on their own — there is no water in them.
These belong after water and a leave-in, never instead of them. Oil on dry hair with nothing underneath seals in the dryness.
A third group is included for what it does at the scalp rather than the strand. Rosemary extract has reasonable evidence for supporting circulation at the follicle. Peppermint provides a cooling signal at low concentrations. Tea tree has antimicrobial properties useful for some flaking.
An ingredient listed last on a label is present in trace amounts. The claim on the front tells you what was added; the position in the list tells you whether enough was added to matter.

Almost every mystery breakage problem comes down to this balance. Hair needs both water and structure. Too much of one without the other, and the hair either snaps…
The goal is not a perfect style. It is a child who does not dread the chair.
